This week’s show kicks off a periodic series on race relations in SC titled Conversations on Race. Congressman James Clyburn and Charleston businesswoman Linda Ketner tell dramatic stories about race relations.
College of Charleston students round out the show with an interracial dialogue where they are breaking down racial barriers and getting to know each other as individuals.
“Race always matters,” Clyburn insists. He tells stories of his work in the Civil Rights Movement, his childhood in the segregated South, and his beliefs about the changes that need to happen. Clyburn represents the sixth district of SC in the US House and was elected majority whip in December.
Ketner talks about her childhood brushes with the system of segregation and her convictions that more racial equality work was done in the 1960s and ‘70s than is being done today. She also shares her thoughts about what individuals can do to change that.
